Drugs, which are commonly abused, may be broken down into three main families for the purpose of discussion. Drugs, which do not fit clearly into one category, have been classified according to their main physiological action when abused by people.
THE CNS DEPRESSANTS: Definition - drugs that have a calming, tranquilizing, analgesic, hypnotic or intoxicating effect.
1.ALCOHOL - - Beer, Wine, Liquors, Cordials, Alcohol-base products and medicines.
2.BARBITURATES - - Secondal, Nembutal, Tuinal, Amytal, Phenobarbital, Sodium Pentothal, Butisol and others.
3.BENZODIAZEPINES - - Librium, Valium, Dalmane, Xanax, Ativan, Tranxene, Restoril, Seraz.
4.METHAQUALONES - - Q UAALUDE, Soppr, Sommafac, Optimil, Parest, etc.
5.NARCOTIC ANALGESTICS - - Demerol, Dilaudid, Percodan, Darvon, Talwin, etc.
6.OPIATES - - Opium, Heroin, Morphine, Codeine, Methadone, etc.
7.ANESTHETICS AND OTHERS - - Nitrous Oxide, Chloral Hydrate, Numerous Solvents, Inhalents and Gases, etc.
THE CNS STIMULANTS: Definition - - Drugs which temporarily arouse or accelerate physiological activity.
1.AMPHETAMINES - - Methamphetamine, Biphetamine, Dexedrine, Penzedrine, Methedrine, etc.
2.COCAINE - - Leaves, Alkaloid Powder, Crystal Forms (freebase and crack), etc
3. CAFFEINE - - Coffee, Tea, Cola, Aspirin, Chocolate, etc.
4.LOOK-ALIKES - - Ephedrine, Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), Caffeine.
5.NICOTINE AND OTHERS - - Tabacco,Snuff, Some Inhalents, etc.
THE HALLUCINOGENS:Definition - - Drugs which induce delerium, distortion of the senses and perceptions, or hallucinations.
1.CANNABINOIDS - - Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Cannabicyclol, Cannabidiol, Cannabichron.
2.PHENCYCLIDINE - - PCP, Angel Dust, Animal Tranq, Peace Pill, Whack.
3.SYNTHETIC AND SEMI-SYNTHETICS - - LSD, DOM (stp), MDA, MMDA, etc.
4.ORGANICS - - Psilocybin, Psilocin,te/Mescaline, Dimethyltriptamine (DMT), Atropine, Nutmegs and Mace, Morning Glory, etc
