HOW YOUNG PEOPLE CAN TELL IF DRINKING IS A PROBLEM

1. Do you lose time from school or work due to drinking/getting high?

2. Do you feel uncomfortable if alcohol/drugs are not available at social functions? (parties, concerts. etc.)

3. Has your use of alcohol/drugs caused you or your family any financial difficulties? (fines, lawyers' fees, etc.)

4. Do you drink or get high alone?

5. Has anyone ever expressed their concern about your use of alcohol or drugs?

6. Do you drink/get high shortly after you have had a problem at home, work or school?

7. Have you ever tried to quit or cut back on your use of alcohol/drugs but were not able to do it?

8. Does it bother you if someone says that you drink or get high too much?

9. Do you usually take a drink/get high when you go out on a date?

10. Do you drink/get high before school/work or during school/work hours?

11. Have you neglected responsibilities at home, work, or school to drink/get high?

12. Is there anyone in your family with a drinking/drug problem?

13. Are you able to drink/use more now than when you first started to drink/use?

14. Do you like to drink/get high when you start your day?

15. Do most of your friend's drink/get high?

16. Do you drink to get drunk or use drugs to get wasted?

17. Have you ever had a complete loss of memory from drinking or using?

18. Have you ever been arrested, apprehended by school officials or sent to a program because of alcohol/drug related offenses?

19. Do you go to out-of-the-way places to drink/get high, such as garages, restrooms, etc.'?

20. Do you think you have a problem with alcohol or drugs? A yes' to one question is a warning. A "yes" to as few as three questions means that alcohol has almost certainly become - or is becoming - a serious problem.
